FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about getting started with My Psychiatrist.
View All FAQsYou can schedule your first appointment at My Psychiatrist by calling our office at (703) 596-4796 or by using our convenient online booking system. New patients are asked to complete intake forms through our secure patient portal prior to their visit, which helps us prepare for a thorough and productive first session.
Your initial psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive 45- to 60-minute session where your provider will review your medical and mental health history, discuss your current symptoms, and answer any questions you may have. Based on this evaluation, your psychiatrist will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.
Most insurance plans do not require a referral to see a psychiatrist at our practice. However, certain HMO plans may require a referral from your primary care physician before your visit. We recommend calling our office at (703) 596-4796 to verify your specific plan requirements before scheduling.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who specializes in mental health and is licensed to prescribe medication, while a therapist typically holds a master's or doctoral degree and provides talk therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). At My Psychiatrist, we offer both psychiatric medication management and therapy services under one roof, making it easy to receive comprehensive mental health care at our Reston and Falls Church locations.
My Psychiatrist accepts a wide range of insurance plans including Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), CareFirst, Cigna, United Healthcare, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and many more. Because plan networks can change, we encourage you to call our office at (703) 596-4796 to verify that your specific insurance plan is accepted before your appointment.
Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific insurance plan, but copays for psychiatric and therapy visits typically average between $21 and $45 per session. Our billing team verifies your insurance benefits before your first visit so you know what to expect, and we are happy to answer any questions about your coverage.
